Man, daughter linked to murder of Nanyuki businessman detained for more days

By Eric Ngure

Two suspects who were arrested in connection with the murder of a businessman in Nanyuki, Laikipia County will remain in police custody longer after the court deferred their plea taking to January next year.

The accused; Jane Wanjiku and her father Charles Macharia, were Thursday presented before Nanyuki Magistrate Njeri Thuku but did not take plea since they were yet to undergo a mental assessment as directed by the court.

The court was told that the accused had not undergone the psychiatric examination since the doctor who is supposed to conduct the test at Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital is on sick leave.

The suspects, through their lawyer Rixon Shikuku, applied to be transferred from Nanyuki police cells to Nanyuki GK prisons claiming that they were being harassed by the police.

The plea taking was set for January 3, 2019.

The accused were last arraigned in court on December 6, but were remanded for 14 days  after the court granted the prosecution’s request for more time to detain the suspects pending conclusion of investigations.
