Man destroys farm produce worth Ksh.200k to stop wife from working on Fathers Day

A middle-aged man at Kamagambo village in Gichugu, Kirinyaga county has destroyed farm produce with an estimated value of over Ksh.200,000 after his wife insisted on going to the market on Sunday.

According to witnesses, the man who used a machete to slice green bananas and slash sacks of avocados said that his wife should have stayed at home because it was Father’s Day.

According to neighbours who spoke to Citizen Digital, the aggrieved woman makes a living by selling farm produce at the Kitui market on Sundays.

Hellen Kaari Muriithi, one of the women whose wares were destroyed, said that boda boda riders informed her that someone had destroyed their wares.

Upon further investigation, they discovered that the suspect is married to one of the women whose bananas had been destroyed.

“Mimi ni mmjowa wa wale vitu zao zimeharibiwa, tumefanya uchunguzi tukajua kwamba aliyeharibu ni bwana ya mama mmoja tunaenda na yeye soko,” Hellen told Citizen Digital.

Hellen estimates that she lost at least Ksh.15,000 in the Sunday attack on green bananas she had intended to sell.

Another trader, David Muthike, whose avocados were among the produce destroyed on Sunday morning, estimated that the attack cost traders at least Ksh. 200,000.

According to Muthike, the man, who has yet to be identified, demanded that his wife take the day off because it was Father’s Day.

“Mwanaume huyo alikuwa anataka bibi yake akae nyumbani ndio washerehekee siku ya Fathers Day,” Muthike told Citizen Digital.

The shocking incident has left residents shocked and traders unsure of what action to take and whether there will be reparations.
