Man dies of negligence in Bungoma hospital

A 60-year-old man has died at the Bungoma County Referral Hospital after allegedly waiting for over three hours before being attended to by doctors.

Speaking at the hospital, David Kibui’s relatives said he arrived at the hospital at 9 am in the morning and was forced to queue despite being in critical condition.

They claimed that efforts to get the nurses’ attention were ignored, adding that they were asked to first pay the Ksh50 for registration.

Rodgers Barasa, who ferried the deceased to the hospital, said the doctors ignored his critical condition.

He called for stern action to be taken against the hospital for inhuman behaviour, arguing that it was not the first time patients were dafter being neglected.

Following the man’s demise, an angry mob barred hospital staff from taking his body to the mortuary claiming they should have attended to him while he was still alive.

However, the hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr Magrina Mayama, declined the claims saying that hospital staff realised that the man had died on arrival while placing him on the stretcher.

Dr Mayama said the deceased’s son on realising that his father had died became hostile and almost assaulted the hospital staff, forcing them to run for safety.

She added that when they refused to take the body to the mortuary, the hospital gave them a vehicle to assist them to transport the body home.
