Man drowns in Lake Victoria in suspected suicide

A middle-aged man died on Sunday evening after jumping into Lake Victoria at Pier Beach in Homa Bay Town in a case of suspected suicide.

According to traders at the beach, the man had been frequently visiting Pier beach and asking for assistance from the women traders in order to woo a certain woman into marrying him.

Homa Bay Township Location Assistant Chief Duncan Odhiambo says on Sunday the deceased went to the beach carrying a Bible in a polythene bag and asked for the whereabouts of the said woman saying he wanted to marry her.

Chief Odhiambo said the women, who were used to seeing the man at the beach, told him that the woman he wanted was not available at the beach and in the process he left them heading towards the shore of the lake.

The administrator said the deceased removed his shoes, put them in one of the polythene bags and moved closer to the lake where he was heard shouting before jumping into the water.  His shoes, polythene bag and bible were found on the shore where he had also written the name of the woman he had been pursuing.

The Beach Management Unit leadership has since began an operation to search for the man’s body.
