Man impersonates Al-Shabaab member to get job at NYS

A 23-year-old man accused of being an Al Shabaab imposter has been arraigned in court and charged with giving false information to police.

It is alleged that on July 29, 2015, Abdi Hassan Oyaro presented himself at Kamukunji police station claiming to be an Al Shabaab returnee from Somalia.

He told the police that he was responding to government amnesty call but investigations revealed otherwise.

Reliable sources indicate that Oyaro is a Kajiado resident and changed into Islam a few days before he presented himself to police claiming to be an Al Shabaab member.

In mitigation, Oyaro told Nairobi Milimani Courts’ Senior Principal Magistrate Charity Oluoch that he decided to use the tactic in order to be considered for a job at the NYS, given that Al Shabaab returnees were being awarded jobs at the department.

He pleaded guilty to the charges but asked the court to forgive him since he is an orphan and jobless and has to fend for his grandmother and siblings.

The magistrate has ordered for a pre-sentence report to reveal background information of the accused person pending sentencing on 24th August 2015.
