Man in brutal police attack video records statement

The victim of a brutal police attack that was caught on camera in Nairobi’s Industrial Area has told of his fear and pain as an officer reigned down blows and kicks on him.

Brian Ogutu has recorded a statement with police who had earlier said that they would press charges against the officer only if the victim came forward with information.

He said the drama began when he was walking back to work after having lunch and encountered a street boy trying to steel metal rods from a nearby godown.

He narrates how an altercation ensued when he tried to scare away the boy. His friend, who had accompanied him to lunch, saw the melee and hurled a stone at the boy to ward him off.

He however missed his target and the stone landed on a matatu.

“The policeman who was inside the matatu came out, got hold of me and started kicking and hitting me,” Ogutu said.

A witness recorded the incident and shared the video online causing hue and cry from Kenyans.

”I tried telling the policeman that I work at Print Park next door and that my lunch break is over so I have to go back to work but he wouldn’t listen,” Ogutu lamented.

His mother, Jacinta Maganda, claims that some police officers have tried to convince them to settle the matter out of court.

”The police officer is asking for negotiations to an extent that he even told us that he’s willing to take a loan. But we are not ready for any compensation. All we want is justice,” she said.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Joseph ole Tito has ordered Industrial Area DCI boss to record a statement from Ogutu to assist with ongoing investigations.

Officers are reported to have positively identified the policeman in question but they have refused to reveal his identity.
