Man killed in Kirinyaga for trying to rape his mother

Police in Kirinyaga County are investigating an incident in which a 35-year-old man was killed by a vigilante group at Kiangothe village, Gichugu constituency, for allegedly trying to rape his mother.

According to the 60-year-old mother, her son stormed her house on Friday evening demanding for food, claiming he was the head of the family as his father died ten years ago.

After the meal, the alleged assailant said he wanted to have sex with her and it was then that she fled to a neighbour’s house.

After a while, she decided to go back home but found her son still waiting for her and it was then that she decided to raise alarm, thereby attracting the vigilante group.

A mob justice ensued that included the assailant’s brother. His sister rushed him to Kerugoya Level Four Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

The sister and uncle are angry with their mother for raising alarm.

“It is not right, we criticize it in the strongest terms possible, and we want justice to be followed. Even if he was on the wrong, that was not the right way to discipline him,” said the uncle.

Area residents also accused the vigilante group of using excessive force.

“It is not the first time around here that the vigilante are being called to discipline someone, but this was excessive,” said a resident.

A section of villagers, however, are in support of the vigilante group’s actions saying they even fought illicit brews in the area after chiefs failed.
