Man killed in Migori flash floods

A 35-year-old man was on Monday evening killed in flash floods caused by heavy rains in Migori county.

According to Migori county police commander Mr. Joseph Nthenge, the deceased, identified as Nathan Ogonda was herding cattle along river Migori in Otacho, Suna East sub-county when the flooding happened.

The poluce boss said locals tried to save Mr. Oganda but the floods were heavy and fast and just watched in vain and run downstream where they retrieved his body.

Mr. Nthenge said the family of the deceased declined to hand police the body saying that their culture demands that anybody who dies after such circumstance should be buried immediately at midnight to ward off bad omen.

Police did not contest the family wishes and allowed them to go on with the burial arrangement at their own convenience.

Meanwhile the county police boss has appealed to locals living near water sources to be extra cautious and if possible move away from river banks and other areas susceptible to flooding as rains pound the region.
