Man returns home after 49 years

A family from Kithetu village in Maua, Meru County celebrated the return of one of their sons who disappeared almost half a century ago and went to live somewhere in Laikipia County working as a herdsman.

John Ntoikiome, who disappeared in 1969, revealed that constant bullying from his ever-drunk father during his teenage years drove him out of their home.

Ntoikiome says that he led a miserable life away from home and at some point of his life he even contemplated suicide but at that time it felt like the better alternative.2

“I was young and it was a taboo to talk back to a father. When I heard songs about the Biblical prodigal son, it hit me that I could still return home after all this time,” he told Citizen Digital.

“Herding livestock was a risky affair due to the dangers of lions, leopards and sometimes the communities there turn hostile. Where could I turn to without a family of my own?” He posed.

His brother, Jackson Nchooro Nguo, who is now accommodating him said that when his brother’s arrival has brought so much joy to everyone within their family ties, thus organizing a home-coming party for him.

“We have been looking for him for the last 49 years. Before our father passed on he asked me to never give up the search for him and instructed that when we find him, we should give him his portion of the family land,” said Mr. Nchooro.

Ntoikiome adds that he was often forced to pay victims of livestock attacks.
