Man slapped with 5-year jail term for disconnecting electricity illegally

A man has been jailed for five years after he was found guilty of disconnecting electricity illegally.

Rongo Resident Magistrate Raymond Langat found Jared Omondo guilty of engaging in unauthorized disconnection of electrical apparatus contrary to section 168 (1)(d) of the Energy Act No 1 of 2019.

The offence was committed at Marindi Village, Kanyagwal sub location in Awendo on December 27, 2020.

The convict has 14 days to appeal failure to which he will serve the set jail term.

The court’s judgment comes amid concern over rising cases of illegal power connection and vandalism of property belonging to Kenya Power in Awendo and Rongo.

Rongo sub county administrator Seth Odoyo said the jail term is a lesson to other suspects involved in this illegal activity.

Mr. Odoyo also urged the public to offer any information they have on those vandalising solar lights systems in Rongo town and selling parts.
