Man slaughtered, cooked dog because it ate his chicken – County Commissioner

By Nancy Kagai

Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner Beverly Opwora has refuted reports that a man who was recently arrested for allegedly slaughtering and cooking a dog committed the act out of hunger.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on Saturday, Ms Opwora stated that the dog had reportedly eaten the man’s chicken, hence his decision to slaughter and cook it.

“There have been reports about a man who allegedly cooked a dog due to hunger. I want to strongly refute these reports. The man had earlier recorded a statement with the area chief that he committed the act because the dog had eaten his chicken,” she said.

The man identified as Martin Munene grabbed headlines after he was on Thursday apprehended at his home in Karimba village where police found part of the dog meat boiling in a sufuria while the other had been stored in the house.

In his defence, Munene claimed he decided to slaughter the dog due to hunger, adding that he had not had a meal for the three days and was preparing to have the dog meat with Ugali.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji however later ordered for his immediate release, further directing the County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) to liaise with the County Commissioner to provide the man with adequate food.
