Man threatens President Magufuli on WhatsApp

A middle-aged man was arraigned in court Tuesday for allegedly threatening Tanzania President John Magufuli on social-networking service WhatsApp, reports Tanzania’s Global Publishers.

Kisutu Resident Magistrate Magreth Bankika heard that Businessman Leonard Materu, 31, on July 17, 2016 wrote a message on WhatsApp which was aimed at “threatening President Magufuli”.

As a status update, the accused wrote: “Magu ajiandae tunaenda kupindua mpaka Ikulu (President Magufuli should prepare himself. We are going to topple his government.”

Mr Materu, a resident of Moshi Bar Kwadiwani, pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutor Diana Lukondo told the court that investigations into the case have not been completed and requested for more time to gather sufficient evidence.

The suspect was released on TSh5 million (KSh231, 000) surety bond.

The case will be heard on September 20, 2016.
