Man to spend 2 years in jail for stealing Sh500 macadamia nuts

A 25-year-old man was on Monday sentenced to two years in jail by an Embu court after he was found guilty of stealing 5 kilograms of macadamia nuts worth Sh500.

Steve Kiko Kirago was charged with stealing the nuts from Kirurumwe Coffee Factory on January 24 before Senior Resident Magistrate Samuel Mutai.

The accused reportedly gained access to the factory’s store where he stole the nuts and attempted to flee before security guards nabbed him.

In his defence, Kiko told the court that he had stolen the Sh500 nuts because they were easy to dispose of so that he could use the money to buy medicine, as he was sick.

The magistrate however noted that while his defence was valid, Kiko had still committed an offence which warranted jail time.

Mutai, who pleaded guilty to the offence, was sentenced to two years in prison or a fine of Sh10, 000.

Meanwhile, at the same court, a man was sentenced to two years in jail for stealing Sh 50,000 from his employer and using the money to construct a house.

Stephen Bundi who pleaded guilty to the offence reportedly stole the money from his employer Susan Wangai at Muthigi Village in Embu North after Ms Wangai left him alone for a few minutes in her house.

He is said to have accessed her bedroom before taking the money and running away.

Ms Wangai reported the matter to police, but Bundi stated that he had already bought building materials with it.

He was sentenced to two years in jail or a fine of Sh10,000.
