Man who conned sick child off Sh2.8M caught

Francis ‘Alejandro’ Wanjau, the man who allegedly fled with Sh2.8 million raised to cater for a child’s specialised medical, care has been arrested.

The child’s family said that Wanjau came to their rescue after learning of their 15 month-old daughter’s need for medical attention.

Fidelis Muthoni was to have a specialised medical attention in Canada because she was suffering from a congenital malfunction, hydrocephalus, which is a build-up of cerebral spinal fluid in the brain.

Wanjau, who also runs Hope Foundation, a charity organisation that deals with children with disabilities, took up the matter and promised to raise funds for baby Fidelis through charity and fund drives.

He was entrusted by the desperate family to handle the matter and he managed to raise Sh2.8 million.

The family realized they were being taken for a ride when the departure date drew near and Wanjau started evading them.

The child was supposed to travel on August 16th 2015 as her appointment was on August 18th but they did not travel after Wanjau, who was handling the visa process, cancelled the trip saying Fidelis was seriously sick and could not travel.

Wanjau is said to have cancelled the visa application process after he learnt that he could not accompany the mother and daughter to Canada.

The child is expected to be in Canada by Friday to wait for the surgery at the Centre for Craniofacial Care and research.
