Man who insulted Bomet Governor on Facebook freed on Ksh.30K bail

A man accused of insulting Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok on Facebook has been released on Ksh. 30,000 cash bail.

Dominic Kiplangat, 35, had been arrested on Tuesday night after Governor Barchok complained.

“On diverse dates between September 22, 2019 and October 14, 2019 in Bomet Central sub county within Bomet County without lawful excuse published on Facebook…which aimed to defame a public officer….” the charge sheet reads.

He is accused of publishing obscene information in electronic form contrary to Section 84D of the Kenya Communications Act.

The law states that a person who by means of a licensed telecommunication system— (a) sends a message or other matter that is grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character; or (b) sends a message that he knows to be false for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety to another person, commits an offense and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding Ksh. 50,000.

The case will be mentioned on October 31.
