A 36-year-old man who was the first to undergo a kidney transplant at Embu Level Five Hospital died on Saturday, just a day after doctors declared the operation successful.
Embu County Chief Health Officer Grace Kombuthi said the patient, Antony Njiru, was recuperating at the hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) when he passed on having started to respond to treatment with his first urine being noted.
The Chief Officer said a team of surgeons from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and Embu Level Five Hospital carried out the transplant successfully, after obtaining a kidney from the patient’s brother.
She said the unfortunate incident would not deter the hospital from providing kidney transplant services to patients at affordable costs.
The operation on Mr. Njiru involved a team of experts led by nephrologist Philip Chepget from Moi Teaching and Referral hospital. The operation is said to have taken close to 18 hours being the first in Embu.
The exercise was witnessed by Embu Governor Martin Wambora and University of Embu deputy vice chancellor Kiplagat Kotut and Embu Health Executive, Dr Jamleck Muturi.
