Mandera communities to engage in peace talks to end inter-clan clashes

Clan elders from the Murule and Garreh communities in Mandera County have resolved to engage in a dialogue aimed at bringing an end to hostilities that have been rocking the region.

The community leaders made the announcement on Wednesday, following a meeting held in Nairobi under the auspices of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

Political leaders from the region including Governor Ali Roba, MPs Ibrahim Mude (Mandera South), Adan Haji Ali (Lafey) unanimously endorsed Sheikh Umul Abdi and his team to arbitrate the dispute between the two communities. The elders were led by Sultan of Garreh community Sheikh Haj Alnur Ali and Sultan of Murule community Haji Mohamud Khalif.

Governor Ali Roba said the talks will begin on January 11, 2021.

“We have also received commitment and assurance of support from elders of both communities, political leaders, NCIC and the national and county government,” said the Mandera Governor.

The Garre and Murule clans are currently feuding for control of communal land and pasture between them.

The clashes have been occasioned by control of pasture and water in the region.

The government has been calling on the communities living in the region to coexist harmoniously to ensure speedy development in the region.
