Many Kenyans thought Kathmandu is a town in Ukambani

On Monday, a plane carrying 71 passengers and crew crashed after it veered off the runway while landing at Nepal’s Kathmandu airport, killing 49 people.

It was a sad story that this website ran as part of its international news offering. But once the story hit the interwebs, hilarity ensued when many people thought Nepal’s capital city is a Kenyan town.

The story attracted a lot of shock and concern as expected but with many thinking it had happened in Kenya, panic set in.

A shocking amount of people who commented within the first few minutes of the story being posted online thought Kathmandu is a town in Ukambani region.

To be fair, many said Kathmandu sounds a lot like Kithimani, a town in Machakos County but we cannot speak for those who thought it is in Kiambu.

Here’s a free geography lesson; Kathmandu is the capital city and largest metropolis of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.

It boasts of a population of 1.5 million in the city proper, and 3 million in its urban agglomeration across the Kathmandu Valley, which includes the towns of Lalitpur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur and the municipalities across Kathmandu valley.

It has a multi-ethnic population within a Hindu and Buddhist majority. Religious and cultural festivities form a major part of the lives of people residing in Kathmandu.

Like they say, you learn something new everyday.

Here are a few of the confused ones.
