Mara Heist: Expect arrests any time soon, DCI detectives reveal

Top officials at the Maasai Mara University could be facing arrests if the move by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations is anything to go by.

On Monday, detectives were holed up at the Maasai Mara University just hours after the Mara heist exposé on Citizen TV.

“We collected sensitive evidence we had to drive back to base. Now we go through the documents and prepare the suit before handing it to the DPP,” the team told Citizen TV.

Officers from the DCI had arrived at the university on Monday from as early as 8am and spent hours combing through the institution.

Reports indicate that they interrogated the VC Prof. Mary Walingo and other university staff for over five hours.

Her driver Abdi Noor Hassan was also spotted in the compound.

The Mara heist exposé, that was exclusively aired on Citizen TV on Sunday, unearthed looting of public funds from the university totalling Ksh. 190million.

The next step for the DCI will be to piece together information they gather from the ground with that from the whistle-blowers who recorded their statements last Friday.

They will seek to determine who will be the main suspects and which other individuals can be State witnesses once the case is taken to court.

Citizen TV’s Waihiga Mwaura and Asha Mwilu teamed up to investigate the Mara Heist after four whistle-blowers approached them with damning allegations of fraud at Maasai Mara university.

The two senior journalists analysed data presented including video and audio recordings, bank statements, reconciliation and general ledger extracts

They also reached out to Transparency International Kenya, the former Auditor General Edward Ouko as well as those implicated in the scandal.

Prof. Walingo declined to be interviewed on the matter but later posted a video on the university’s Facebook page alleging that she had been investigating the matter.

Three of these whistle-blowers have applied for witness protection from the State after it emerged that they had been threatened for unearthing the scandal.
