Maraga, Wabukhala vow to continue fight against corruption

Chief Justice David Maraga has assured Kenyans that the Judiciary will not relent in the fight against corruption.

The CJ also put on notice all State Counsel saying they will be expected to deliver substantial and conclusive cases in court.

“If we get any problems or political interference we will tell the President and I am sure he will deal with it,” he said.

He was speaking in Nanyuki during a five-day stakeholders’ workshop with officials of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

According to Maraga, there is a backlog of pending cases dating back to 2009 because of “too many adjournments”.

To deal with this, EACC officials will only be allowed two or three adjournments at most, after which cases will be thrown out of court, he said.

“These games of musical chairs must stop; Wanjiku is not interested in who is doing what, Wanjiku is interested in justice!” Maraga retorted.

The CJ further criticised the number of convictions saying they are very few in matters of corruption.

“We want to talk candidly here and see how we can tackle corruption and issues hampering this fight,” said Maraga

On his part, EACC boss Eliud Wabukhala said that the multi-agency collaboration will help end the blame game.

Wabukhala further called on Kenyans to work with them to fight the vice.

“Public participation is what this fight also lacks, they are willing to bribe even when accessing the very basic services and yet make a lot of noise. Our fight is highly dependent on Wanjiku’ willingness to participate,” he said.

The two leaders assured Kenyans of a well coordinated witness protection program and urged those with evidence on corruption in public service not to be afraid to come forward.
