Margaret Kenyatta appeals for inclusivity for children living with Autism

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has urged stakeholders in the education sector to integrate children living with autism into the system.

Mrs Kenyatta further stated that more investment is required to improve early diagnosis of autistic babies and to enhance capacity and skills for caregivers working with people with autism.

“Today we celebrate World Autism month, and use this opportunity to celebrate our gains, and take stock of challenges we have encountered over the past year in addressing the plight of mothers, families and communities living with loved ones with autism,” she stated.

“Today is also a day to create awareness and speak freely about the pain families experience living with autistic persons, and the stigma and discrimination autistic persons have to deal with within the communities they live.”

In a statement to media houses on Sunday, the First Lady called for support systems for parents and families who play a role in protective those with autism.

“Deliberate effort must be made to protect adults with autism against discrimination in the workspace, and equip them with skills and opportunities that allow them to live a life of dignity, love and hope.

It is a difficult and lonely place for persons with autism. It is a difficult and heartbreaking place for families living with autistic persons.

The First Lady further called for more forums to serve as a catalyst for individuals and stakeholders to consider their contribution to improve the quality of life of autistic persons.

“Research has proved that medical and therapeutic interventions can positively impact the lives of autistic persons. We must cling to that hope. “

“So, as we celebrate World Autistic month, it is my hope that together we can find ways to help autistic persons lead happy, independent lives to their fullest potential.”

April is considered world autism month aimed at representing the opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and to draw attention to those facing an autism diagnosis.
