Marsabit sheikh arraigned over terror links

Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) wants a Muslim cleric who was arrested in Marsabit town over the weekend held for a month to enable them conclude investigations.

The prosecution wants Sheikh Guyo Gorsa held for the said period with a view to undertake detailed interviews with him to find out his co-conspirators.

In its application, ATPU says Gorsa was arrested due to his influence with the terror group, recruitment  and radicalisation of youth in Marsabit to undertake terror activities.

ATPU claim that the Muslim cleric has other associates who are yet to be apprehended but are being pursued by security agencies both within and out of the country.

The sheikh has however, opposed the application saying that police have no basis to detain him for four weeks pending trial.

In his defence, the cleric urged Magistrate Martha Mutuku not to allow ATPU to hold him for more than two days as they have no sufficient evidence of him committing an offence.

Magistrate Mutuku will deliver her ruling on Tuesday, January 16.

Protests erupted in Marsabit town on Saturday immediately after the arrest of the Sheikh who was seized by police while preaching in the town centre.
