Maseno University closed indefinitely
Maseno University has been closed indefinitely in what the administration termed as a break to allow the students to participate in the repeat presidential elections, a thing that has not gone well with the student leadership.
A memo was sent to the students on Wednesday, October 18 demanding that they vacate the university premises by 8a.m on Thursday.
Varsity Public Relations Director Dr. Owen MacOnyango has claimed that the move was taken by the institution to give students a chance to vote and that the closure was not sinister.
The move did not go well with the students saying that the action was abrupt.
Student leader Fred Makajos, said he suspects the management was reacting to chaotic scenes that had been witnessed at the school during the evening.
On Wednesday, hundreds of students joined the locals within the varsity’s area to disrupt an ongoing IEBC training exercise. The students barricaded the Kisumu-Busia highway for the better part of the afternoon engaging the police in running battles.
This is not the first time the students are turning chaotic in the institution, last week a student mob killed a resident whom they claimed had attacked a businesswoman outside the university.
Most universities in the country are on a break with many claiming it is to help students vote.
