Mast climbing man charged with attempted suicide, trespass

Antony Murimi Nyaga; the man who caused a stir after climbing on top of a communication mast and stripping naked to avoid arrest was on Monday arraigned at the Embu Law Courts and charged with attempted suicide.

Murimi was charged that on Sunday, June 10, he climbed to the top of the Safaricom booster and threatened to jump off.

The 23-year-old also faced a second charge of trespassing on private land. He pleaded guilty to both charges while apologizing for his actions.

The accused together with his accomplice illegally gained access to the location of the Safaricom booster by scaling a perimeter wall; triggering an alarm in the process.

When police officers arrived on the scene he decided to ascend the 60-meter mast after his accomplice was apprehended.

“After the Police requested him to climb down, he stripped and continued to ascend further up the mast while chewing khat,” the prosecution told the court.

“It was only through efforts by the Meru disaster team that he was finally brought down.”

The magistrate ordered a probation report be produced in court within seven days upon which the accused will be sentenced.

The case will be heard on Monday, June 18, 2018.
