Matatu driver who speeds off, then rapes passengers arrested in Nakuru

A matatu driver was on Wednesday (November 8) arraigned in court for allegedly raping two of his passengers,  among them a 15-year-old girl, within a span of one week in Molo, Nakuru County.

The driver identified as Simon Wanjau is said to have had a tendency of not stopping where passengers request but would instead drive to his house where he allegedly committed the heinous acts.

The suspect was arrested after allegedly defiling a 15-year-old Class Seven girl at his home.

The minor narrated how the driver did not stop at her destination even after trying to scream.

“I was coming from Njoro town and heading to Elburgon but the driver did not stop and sped off straight to Molo where he took me to his house, locked it and defiled me,” narrated the minor.

The suspect later dropped her off at her uncle’s home and threatened her not to expose him failure to which she would die.

The minor’s uncle reported the matter to the police after the minor revealed what had transpired. She was later taken to hospital.

Barely three days earlier, the driver is reported to have attempted to rape another woman.

According to rape victim, she requested for a lift from the driver last week on Monday but instead of the driver dropping her at her destination, he sped off to his house where he tried to rape her.

“I started screaming and I struggled a lot and were it not for the suspect’s neighbour who heard the commotion, the man could have raped me because he had even removed my trouser,” she said.

The suspect is said to have mocked the victim, telling her that he had been arrested several times over such cases and would soon come out of custody if at all he would be arrested.

The suspect was arraigned before Molo Senior Principal Magistrate David Wahome where he pleaded not guilty to the two charges levelled against him.

On the first case, he was freed on a bond of Ksh. 200,000 with a surety of the same amount while in the second case, he was slapped a bond of Ksh. 300,000 with a similar surety.
