Matatu operators protest release of men charged with Mwiki tout death

Transport was paralysed yet again on the Mwiki-Kasarani Road as operators protested the release of two men who had been charged with the death of a matatu tout.

The operators are protesting the postmortem results which showed that Julius Kamau died of pneumonia and not from injuries inflicted by the beating he allegedly received from John Kibe Nyagah and Geoffrey Ngamau.

They also claim that after their release, the two started chest thumping around the area.

Residents were forced to walk long distances in the morning rain to access transport as the businessmen vowed to present their grievances to the relevant authorities.

Kibe and Ngamau had been accused of beating Kamau to death for overcharging passengers.

On the fateful evening, the bus Kamau was operating left the MSL terminus along Tom Mboya street and on reaching Kasarani, two MSL officers boarded the vehicle and asked passengers how much they had been charged.

It is then that a scuffle ensued with the said officers beating up Kamau, accusing him of tainting the Sacco’s name by overcharging customers.

But the case took a turn when an autopsy report from the hospital showed that Kamau died of pneumonia and not due to assault by the suspects.

“We pray that the suspects be released because we don’t find anything incriminating them to the murder of the deceased,” the court was told.
