Matatu Sacco halts services to retrain drivers on safety

Following the rising cases of road carnage, one of the largest Public Service Vehicles (PSV) Saccos in Murang’a County is carrying out a refresher course for all its drivers and conductors.

The Murang’a – Thika – Nairobi (MTN) Sacco halted its normal operations Tuesday, September 27 and Wednesday, September 28 to re-train its drivers and conductors on safety measures and precautions.

The Sacco grounded its over 200 vehicles for the two days to carry out the exercise following what the chairman, Newton Mwangi, termed as the right direction towards addressing road carnage.

He said that they had also been advised by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to carry out the refresher course for its drivers in a bid to ensure they are conversant with road safety procedures and standards.

The chair, however, said that their vehicles had not been involved in any fatal accident lately, but what they were doing was putting in place cautionary measures.

He accused some drivers of tampering with speed governors saying that should any driver be found culpable, they will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

He said the drivers and conductors need to change their attitude towards customers and treat them with courtesy.
