Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua spends the weekend in police cells

Mathira lawmaker Rigathi Gachagua will spend the weekend in custody awaiting arraignment on Monday to face money laundering, corruption and abuse of office charges.

Gachagua on Saturday spent a second night at Gigiri Police Station where he was taken after hours of interrogation at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu road.

The first time legislator was picked from his Ruguru home in Mathira Constituency by over a dozen detectives in a dawn raid and driven to the DCI headquarters.

He is accused of money laundering, with investigators placing the figure at over Ksh.7 billion.

He is also accused of misappropriation of CDF funds and benefiting from questionable procurement of medical equipment for Nyeri County hospitals during the reign of his late brother Nderitu Gachagua as governor.

Gachagua however claims his arrest and pending prosecution is politically instigated because of his relationship with Deputy President William Ruto.
