Mathira residents decry biting water shortage

Residents of Mathira Constituency on Thursday took to the streets to protest biting water shortage in the area.

The residents were demanding that their water lines be reconnected to Ragati Dam, claiming that Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua had ordered Mathira Water and Sanitation Company (MAWASCO) to cut the water supply since it’s under the County Government of Nyeri.

The residents accused Mathira MP Peter Weru of favoring residents in Upper Magutu by ordering the disconnection of the line.

The residents are now calling on the governor to reconnect the area’s water supply to the dam, saying they are at risk as hospitals in the area also lack water supply.

Central Province police boss Larry Kyeng urged the residents to observe peace, saying anyone who will disrupt peace before the case is determined will face the full force of the law.
