Matiang’i addresses Form 1 school fees worry

Students joining Form 1 as day scholars will not pay a single shilling, acting Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has clarified.

Speaking on Tuesday while supervising Form 1 admission at Jamhuri High School in Nairobi, Dr. Matiang’i said the government has paid tuition fees for all students joining the day wing in all schools across the country.

“What does free day secondary education mean, it means that those who have children coming in to the day wing will pay nothing, the government has paid Ksh.22,240 tuition for every student for all our children in schools. Those who are coming as day students will not pay anything,” said Dr. Matiang’i.

He added that the day scholar students will also get text books for the six core subjects being issued to all students.

In December last year, the government introduced the day unit especially in national schools to increase Form One enrollment to almost one million.

The government indicated that the opening of day wings in top national schools would begin in Nairobi before being introduced to other counties.

All the 993,718 candidates who sat the 2017 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam are set to join secondary schools.

Some of the top boarding schools that will be enrolling students in the day wing include Nairobi School, Lenana School, Moi Girls’ and St. Georges.
