Matiangi bans disco matangas in the Coast region

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has banned all night-mourning events, popularly known as disco matangas, around the Coast region.

Speaking after a consultative meeting with security stakeholders in the Mombasa, Matiang’i attributed the increased rape case in the region to the disco matangas saying that this will not be tolerated.

“The cases of rape we keep receiving from these so called disco matangas… This is the crisis we have to confront and we are not going to do public relations about it. We will be hard on this issue,” said CS Matiang’i.

The Interior CS noted that no one will be allowed to conduct such gatherings beyond 11pm, warning that those who flout the order will be arrested and prosecuted.

CS Matiang’i, who was accompanied by Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, was keen to note that the government will do whatever it takes to restore security in the region.

“If I have no problem deploying additional security resources specifically to deal with this issue,” said Matiang’i.

The CS further indicated that all Police Commanders in the region were under strict instructions and were expected to be strict in the implementation of the ban.

On his part, IG Boinnet insisted that they will continue intensifying security operations in the region until all criminal activities are wiped out.

Boinnet further urged residents to work together with the police and help eliminate this vice.
