Matiangi, Macharia, Balala make impromptu visit to JKIA

Three Cabinet Secretaries made an impromptu visit to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday morning as Kenya gears up for direct flights to the United States.

Transport CS James Macharia,Internal Security CS Fred Matiang’i and their Tourism counterpart Najib Balala announced the formation of a Cabinet committee involving officials from the three ministries to streamline operations at the JKIA with the next 100 days.

In the 5:30am visit, Dr Matiang’i promised to streamline taxi services while Balala announced plans to have Utalii College train all civil servants at JKIA in a bid to improve service delivery.

The Transport CS said measures proposed by his two Cabinet colleagues will go a long way in ensuring that JKIA meets the required compliance standards needed for direct flights to the United States.

Macharia said the government is working round the clock to ensure gaps experienced in the management of the Kenya Airports authority are sealed as well as ensure agencies operating at the airport work together to improve services.

“We came here because this is a key strategic institution of government in terms of making this country a hub and making sure we are who we claim we are and improve services,” said the Transport CS, Macharia.

Dr Matiangi said his ministry will ensure that security at the airport is enhanced.

“We want to make sure there is order and that this place is secure. When you visit Kenya and you land in Nairobi, this is your first contact with Kenya and it must be worth the while of everyone who comes into the country,” said Dr Matiang’i
