Media Council warns against attacks on journalists

The Media Council of Kenya on Thursday issued a warning against attacks on journalists after eight reporters were attacked and their equipment damaged in Lodwar town, Turkana County.

In a statement to newsrooms, Deputy CEO Victor Bwire condemned the incident terming it unacceptable.

The eight journalists from Citizen TV, KBC, NTV, KTN, Radio Maisha, The Star newspaper, Daily Nation and a local radio station were attacked after rowdy youth stormed a presser organised by KANU Party.

An official claiming to be the newly-elected KANU Turkana chairman, Enock Kamario, was making an address when the sitting Chairman, Charles Lorogoi and other leaders, accompanied by rowdy youth, ambushed them causing mayhem.

”It’s wrong and unacceptable that people would take the law into their own hands to threaten other Kenyans, destroy their property and stop them from doing their work through which they earn their living for the mere fact that they think that what the journalists were doing was wrong,” said Bwire

The attack comes in less than one month after the previous attack on 2nd January 2018 while the journalists were covering a story at Eliye Springs.
