Meet Nic Hailey, the new British High Commissioner to Kenya

The new British High Commissioner to Kenya will be arriving in December, UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) announced on Monday.

Mr Nic Hailey, whose full name is Nicholas James Hailey, is a father of two who has worked for the FCO for 18 years.

Mr Hailey joined the FCO as a desk officer in 1997 at the European Union Directorate, where he worked for two years.

He later moved to Paris where he worked till 2001 at the École Nationale d’Adminstration before becoming the Private Secretary to Her Majesty’s Ambassador, a position he held till 2003 when he left for Berlin.

In 2003, Mr Hailey became the foreign secretary’s speechwriter till 2005 before moving on to head the strategy, communication and training department at the FCO.

Between the years of 2008 and 2012, he moved to Washington where he served as a political economist and communications expert.

He then moved to Kabul as a deputy Ambassador before becoming the FCO Director for Africa, a position he has held since 2013.

He and his family are expected in the country in December this year to take over the role from Dr Chris Turner who has served in Kenya for three years.
