Mentally ill man 35,reportedly beaten to death by police enforcing curfew in Kakamega

A 35-year-old man has died in Kakamega after he was reportedly beaten up by police officers enforcing the 7pm to 5pm curfew.

According to family who spoke to Citizen TV, Ramadhan Juma went missing on Wednesday night.

The deceased left his parents home on Wednesday evening and had not returned by Thursday morning, prompting his family to launch a search party.

Juma who is mentally ill was found by his kin with grave injuries at the Kakamega County Refferal Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.

Zeinab Abdalla, the deceased’s mother has asked the government to intervene and ensure that justice is served.

Kakamega Central OCPD David Kabena said investigations into the matter are ongoing but poured cold water on claims that Juma had been beaten by police officers.

“We have heard that the deceased has mental problems, maybe he went out there touching other people’s property and was beaten by people who didn’t know he was sick,” he said.

Kabena now says police officers await post-mortem results to ascertain the cause of death.
