Meru County Government accused of advertising ghost jobs

The Meru County Government is on the spot for advertising and recruiting up to 96 individuals to seemingly non-existent positions in the county jobs plan.

This was unearthed after the Kenya Health Professional Society (KHPS) Secretary General Moses Lorre wrote to the Meru County Public Service Board threatening legal action.

The letter, dated April 4, 2018, alleged that 96 members of KHPS who were offered job opportunity by the county government were in darkness on whether the jobs existed or not.

It also stated that the fate of the individuals was unknown and they were in a dilemma on whether to start looking for different jobs or to wait for the county jobs.

The said individuals are also said to have reported to the county offices on September 1, 2017 as indicated in the appointment letters but the county failed to deploy them, contrary to the Labour Relations and Employment Act.

The aggrieved individuals, through their Secretary General, now say that the county appointment letters stipulated that they had to resign from their former positions upon receipt, to which they obliged.

Mr. Lorre said the health of the workers had since taken a dive after suffering income loss, adding that they are currently facing unbearable conditions yet the office continues to remain tight-lipped on the matter.

“Kindly note that unless this matter is resolved amicably within the next 14 days, we will have no option but seek legal redress on behalf of our members,” reads the letter by Mr. Lorre.
