Meru County vehicle kills one in road accident

One person died and another was seriously injured after a motorcycle they were riding on collided with a vehicle said to belong to the Meru County Government.

Eyewitnesses said the deceased, a mother to a six-month-old baby, died on the spot while his brother sustained fractured limbs following the accident that occurred in Imenti North around Giantune market.

Reports indicate that the county government vehicle was speeding on the slippery road before hitting the motorcycle from behind.

“The car was over speeding and the road was slippery, it was moving in a zig-zag manner before hitting the boda-boda from behind,” one of the witnesses, Martin Kiogora, told Citizen Digital.

The vehicle only described as a grey double-cabin pick-up belonging to the county government sped off from the scene after the incident.

Boda-boda riders camped outside Meru Police Station demanding the arrest of the driver and threatening to burn the vehicle if action was not taken.

Imenti North Member of Parliament Rahim Dawood urged Meru county government transport manager to ensure county vehicles are taken to the police station for identification to know the perpetrator of the act.

“There is one vehicle am being told is missing, I ask the one responsible to ensure the vehicle is brought here today so that we can know. We don’t want the car to be repaired and then brought claiming it did not hit the bodaboda operator,” said Mr Dawood.

The injured was taken to Chaaria Mission Hospital, while the body of the deceased was moved to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary.
