Meru MCAs oppose Governor Kiraitu’s move to sack 1,000 workers

Meru Members of County Assembly have elicited mixed reactions over Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s move to sack 1,030 casual workers after an audit of the county’s human resource systems by consultancy firm, Deloitte.

The governor sacked the workers on January 20, 2018 in a bid to streamline the county’s wage bill which according to Kiraitu was gobbling up Ksh.20 million of the county revenue per month.

Speaking in Meru town, County Assembly Majority leader Victor Kariithi supported the purge saying that more than half of the casual workers engage themselves in their private businesses yet they still get paid at the end of the month.

“The human resource system was flawed. It is well known that some of the casual labourers are students therefore the governors move is a step in the right direction,” said Mr. Kariithi.

However, another group of MCAs who oppose the move, led by Deputy Speaker Elias Murega, demanded to see the audit report before supporting the decision.

“Our position is that ghost workers must be fired however firing the casual labourers is an ill informed decision and we ask the governor to reconsider,” said Mr. Murega.
