We dont vote for parties, we vote for individuals, Meru women rep warns big parties

Meru County Women Representative Florence Kajuju has warned the major political parties in the county to be careful and democratic in the nomination process or face massive defections going into the General Election.

Kajuju has noted that many political aspirants are defecting from the so-called big parties in fear of botched nomination processes.

“Some people are imagining that they own a party, that they are guaranteed of been nominated. This is why so many aspirants in Meru have defected to other parties,” said the women representative.

Kajuju also warned party leaders against interfering with party activities and drumming up support for their preferred candidates as these are some of the key reasons why so many aspirants are currently defecting to other parties or declaring to go as independent candidates in Meru.

She noted that people in Meru are not accustomed to voting in their leaders on the basis of party lines, but development ambitions, leadership characters, and track record.

“In Meru County, people don’t care about parties. If the 2013 election is anything to go by, we had ODM, TNA, APK, and independent candidates who clinched seats. The people I have spoken to are telling me we are not going to vote somebody just because he/she belongs to a particular party,” added Kajuju.
