Meru police destroy 400 litres of illicit brew

Police in Meru County have destroyed about 400 litres of illicit brew hidden in a home at Makutano area.

The liquor comprising 42 litres of Chang’aa and 300 litres of Mugacha were found packaged in small plastic bags as well as jerry cans ready for supply within the locality.

Inside the house paraphernalia believed to be used in making the illegal brew were also found, however the occupants are said to have taken off shortly before the police arrived.

The raid that was prompted by a tip-off from members of public was aimed at arresting a gang of illegal brewers who are said to have been paying their way to freedom every time they are nabbed.

Police said they cracked down on illegal brewers over the festive season and they intend to raid drinking dens to rid the area of second generation liquor.

Meanwhile, NACADA Chairman John Mututho has challenged alcohol manufacturers to rethink their approach on advertising their products.

Mid last year President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the Members of Parliament from Central Kenya to lead the war against illicit brews in their constituencies.

In the directive, the president also revoked all licences of bars and other outlets selling second generation brews in the region.

We cannot allow this (sale and consumption of the illicit brews) to continue”, said the president.

President Kenyatta mandated the MPs and other stakeholder to move from door to door closing all outlets selling illicit drinks and destroying those in the process of manufacturing and selling the drinks.
