Meru University closed after student killing by police

Meru University of Science and Technology has been closed indefinitely following the killing of the institution’s student leader by police on Tuesday.

In a press release sent to newsrooms, Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, said she has formed a team that will conduct investigations to establish cause of the death of Evans Njoroge.

Njoroge was shot and killed by police after protests by the students turned violent.

He was leading the protests against what they termed as ill-treatment by the school vice principal while also demanding for his immediate resignation.

“In the meantime, we would like to appeal to all students to respect the university’s decision that the institution remains closed as arrangements are made to recall them for resumption of studies,” read the statement.

The Cabinet Secretary said the investigative team will work together with the University Council to ensure a speedy conclusion.

“The Ministry has constituted a team to urgently investigate the matter to establish the cause(s) of repeated cases of unrest at the University in a bid to forestall similar situations in the future” she said.

Last year in August, the institution was closed after students went on the rampage protesting over poor infrastructure. The varsity was reopened in January 2018 but three weeks later the students were sent home after going on strike.

They were set to resume learning in two weeks’ time, before yesterday’s deadly protest.
