Methanol nabbed in Muranga

Police have impounded 6,000 liters of methanol and arrested one person in connection with production of illicit brew in Murang’a County.

Acting on a public tip-off, the police officers intercepted a lorry, Reg No. KCC 432H, Isuzu TRR that was ferrying the methanol to illicit brew producers.

Murang’a county commander Naomi Ichami said the suspect, identified as Peter Macharia Mwangi, was the driver of the lorry.

She said the methanol was packed in 30 drums with a capacity of 200 liters each.

“Several deaths have been reported in the country that are as a result of consumption of illicit brew,” said Ms Ichami.

The driver did not have the proper documentation to drive the lorry which, according to records, had been cleared to ferry electronics from Nairobi to Embu.

She said that police were in touch with the Kenya Revenue Authorities to establish on whether the methanol was legally obtained.

The lorry and the driver were taken to Makuyu police station and the driver charged in Kigumo law court. He was released on a Ksh 150,000 bond.

The case will be mentioned on July 6th, 2015.
