Michuki rules: Miraa vehicles will not be spared in crackdown PS Kibicho

Interior and Coordination Principal Secretary, Karanja Kibicho on Thursday said that vehicles which ferry miraa (khat) from Meru and Mbeere must adhere to traffic rules.

Speaking in Kirinyaga County, the Principal Secretary warned that the vehicles will not be spared in the crackdown expected to start on Monday which will bring back the famous ‘Michuki rules.’

Mr. Kibicho reiterated the government’s efforts and plans to restore sanity in the public transport which the late Cabinet Minister John Michuki had installed.

The PS also reminded matatu owners to be avoid the crackdown net by ensuring that their vehicles are fitted with set requirements; speed governors, seat belts, uniformed staff and a yellow line.

“Not only will we arrest the drivers and the conductors but we will also arrest the passengers boarding already full vehicles,” warned PS Kibicho.

Many public service vehicle owners and operators have asked for leniency and more time to comply with the orders as others try to beat the Monday deadline.
