Migori: 11-month-old infant drowns after falling into a borehole

A somber mood engulfed Orembe village in Migori on Thursday following the death of an 11-month-old infant who drowned in a borehole.

Acting area Assistant chief Yogo Onyango said the baby who was left in the custody of her 5-year-old sister was playing around the house when she slipped into an open borehole within the compound and drowned.

Yogo said the infant’s mother identified as Belinda Akinyi had gone to the market leaving the young child under the care of sister.

Attempts to quickly rescue the infant from the well were futile.

The body was yet to be retrieved from the well as of Thursday night amid calls by area chief for the locals to cover up their boreholes.
