Migori accuses national gov’t of importing cheap Chinese fish
Migori Governor Okoth Obado has accused the National Government of sabotaging the economy of Nyanza region by importing cheap fish from China.
Governor Obado argued that it is unfair to import cheap fish from China despite there being enough fish in Lake Victoria saying this is a deliberate move to kill the economy of Nyanza.
“Kenyan waters have enough fish only that the government has failed to implement salient policies such as regulating the fishing methods to control the fishing industry,” said Mr. Obado.
He blamed the National Government over the harassment of Kenyan fishermen at Migingo Island as the fishing activities are restricted owing to the controversy surrounding the Island.
The Department of Fisheries has been allocated Ksh 27, 185,000 in the county’s 2016/2017 budget that will be used in developing ponds and buying fingerlings for farmers.
