Migori boda boda operators protest poor state of roads

Operations in Awendo Town were on Tuesday morning paralyzed for several hours after Boda boda operators took to the streets to protest the poor state of roads in most parts of the sub-county.

The boda boda operators complained of the poor state of roads, especially the road from Awendo Town to Rinya Market and the road from Awendo to Rapogi, which they claim to be in very bad state and cannot be accessed easily.

Wickylife Omondi, a boda boda operator, says most roads in Awendo are inaccessible hence posing a challenge to transporters in the area as they lead to high cost of maintenance of vehicles and motorcycles.

He said the county government should stop collecting the Ksh 100 weekly levy from them until it repairs the roads.

In a quick rejoinder, Migori Governor Okoth Obado, said the roads in poor state are already under maintenance and construction and therefore no cause for alarm.

Last month, the Kenya Federation Sugarcane Farmers through its Secretary General Ezra Okoth, blamed the county government for failing to maintain the roads yet it has been collecting money from the road users and receives a substantial allocation from the national government.

Sony Sugar Managing Director Jane Pamela said they submitted Ksh 19 million to the County Government of Migori in the year 2013/2014 which should be used for road maintenance in the sugar belt.
