Migori County faced with water crisis

Migori County has been hit by an acute water shortage following a failure of the main water pumping system for the past two days.

The mishap has seen taps run dry over the past two days forcing locals to look for water from the available water sources including river Migori whose water is not considered safe for drinking.

The water shortage that comes at a time when most parts of the county have been hit by drought has cast fear among locals of a possible cholera outbreak.

Migori residents are now appealing to the county government to come up with a permanent solution to end the perennial water problem in the county that has lasted three months.

In the month of November 2016, the water shortage lasted two weeks after the county government failed to pay over Ksh1million for an electricity bill, a similar incident was experienced in the month of September 2016.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, Migori County executive committee in charge of water, Mrs Isca Oluoch, said the ministry is working on fixing the mechanical problem to restore water supply.

Meanwhile, Migori residents have questioned why the county has increased water charges for non metered clients from the previous flat rate of Ksh500 to Ksh1500 per month.

The CEC, Mrs Isca Oluoch, said she is not aware of the changes, adding that she will investigate from the officers directly involved.
