Migori County gets Ksh 72M to fight malnutrition

In a bid to help fight malnutrition in the country, the European Union has donated Ksh 72 million to Migori County.

Migori has recorded high cases of malnutrition, especially affecting children and women.

According to the Western Kenya region EU Director, Titus Katembu, the high number of stunted children is as a result of malnutrition in the county which stands at 26.4 percent, a level higher than the national rate which is stands at 26 percent.

Speaking during the launch of this program, Katembu said the rate of malnutrition in Migori County must be dealt with as quickly as possible.

He said high malnutrition level in Migori County has also contributed to the high rate of maternal and child deaths in the county asserting that majority of the Migori residents suffer from malnutrition related complications.

Katembu said tackling malnutrition does not just involve giving food, but giving food with the required nutritional value.

He noted that the most governments, Migori included, have poorly funded nutrition related programs.

MigoriCounty Director of Health, Dr Joel Gondi, said 45 percent of children death is as a result of malnutrition saying that any government cannot avoid matters of nutrition.

He said the county government will support this program to the fullest so it can benefit the people of Migori County.
