Migori County Level Four laboratory gets accredited

The Migori County Level Four Hospital has been accredited by the Kenya Accreditation Services (KENAH) to become the 22nd accredited laboratories countrywide and will now be able to conduct eight medical tests as well as support medical research services.

The accreditation of the laboratory is now a relief to patients who have been referred to hospitals outside the county to have some medical tests, which were previously not available at the facility, conducted.

Speaking during the issuance of the certificate on Thursday, February 16 at the facility, the Kenya Accreditation Services Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Milgo, said Migori County is among the 22 accredited laboratories countrywide.

“We began this journey of accreditation back in the year 2012, and we have moved up to now that we have achieved this.  Initially the labs we used to refer so many samples were outside labs but currently we are able to do almost all the tests. Like climatology, blood chemistry, CD4 apart from histopathology,” said Milgo.

In his remarks, Milgo said setting up to standard laboratories in the country will boost medical services in the country especially on treatment of HIV, TB and even malaria which are among the top killer diseases in the country.

The CEO also urged hospital managers and the medics to ensure that all health services besides laboratories are accredited and the standards maintained so that hospital facilities can continue giving better health services.

He added that the accreditation (ISO15/189/2012) should run for three years and will be evaluated after six months.
