Migori County records 24.3% early pregnancy rate

Migori County ranks 4th out of 47 counties in early pregnancies, a report by the Network for Adolescent Youth in Africa (NAYA), a non-governmental organization shows.

According to NAYA’s communication officer Vincent Ogaya, the rate of early pregnancies in Migori County stands at 24.3 percent after Narok, Homabay and Nyamira counties respectively.

Ogaya said one out of four unmarried girls have given birth in Migori County saying that this is contributed by unprotected sex among the teenagers.

He said the trend is worrying urging the parents, church, teachers and political leaders to join in fighting early pregnancy among the teenagers.

Mr Ogaya said the trend is worrying, though adding it can be controlled in case the parents engage their daughters and sons on sex education, warning them of consequences of engaging in early sex.

He also called on both county and national governments to come up with empowerment programmes for youth since most of them engage in early sex because they are idle.
